BEL CANTO combines the unlikely worlds of glamourous Opera events and hostage situations in a dangerous part of the world, juxtaposed by rich and poor. A world-renowned opera singer becomes trapped in a hostage situation when she's invited to perform for a wealthy industrialist in South America, but why was the film so vague, as to deliberately NOT mention which country in South America !? Thanks to my general knowledge of World Flags, Geography and Culture, I was able to deduce on my own that it happened in Peru (watch the film carefully, for a large red/white/red tricoleur national flag in the background during the Freedom Fighters guerilla take over of the mansion!) In this case, the story is more interesting surrounding the Opera Singer, rather than the Opera part being of any major interest [they definitely could have added more Opera pieces to liven the film up!]

An interesting story surrounding the event, but they failed to make the audience feel deeply moved by the Opera parts, which are sadly few and far between, so any impact from the actual music is fleeting. Watch the film for yourself and see if you are inclined to agree with me on this or perhaps you'll have a slightly different opinion. I wanted to like it more than I actually did, though it was still quite an interesting film with twists to the story, somehow I was left hoping it would be something more. Hardly a realistic plot to narrate, despite a decent effort from both Watanabe and Moore, it feels like unfinished business.
这是一个围绕着事件本身的有趣故事,但遗憾的是电影里的歌剧部分实在是太少了,因此观众是不会被这些部分所感动的,所以来自音乐的冲击总是稍纵即逝。试试看这部电影吧,看看你是否同意我的观点,或者你会有一点不同的看法。电影比不上我预期中的喜欢,尽管它仍然是一部有趣的电影,故事情节曲折,但不知怎的,我还是希望它能展现出更多的东西。虽然渡边和Moore都付出了相当大的努力,但这电影的情节都显得不真实,感觉就像未完结的故事。
The film feels slightly droll and tawdry in parts, though I enjoyed the idea of the surprising double romance juxtapositions between the Opera Singer and the wealthy Japanese business Investor, and conversely by the Japanese Interpreter (Ryô Kase) and the attractive and sympathetic female Guerrilla fighter (María Mercedes Coroy) ~ but how realistic or likely was that ~ really, and in a hostage situation!? After watching it, I kept thinking, 'What's missing here!?' Director, Paul Weitz dropped the ball on this one. Weitz previous works include ABOUT A BOY, IN GOOD COMPANY, AMERICAN DREAMZ, BEING FLYNN (which had a similarly flat feeling to BEL CANTO), GRANDMA, and the TV Series, MOZART IN THE JUNGLE. Sebastian Koch is great in any film he's in (THE LIVES OF OTHERS, NEVER LOOK AWAY), but he's a somewhat wasted talent here, and Christopher Lambert is a washed-up 80/90s star (HIGHLANDER) still floating around like a bad smell, so he adds little to the film. [5/10]
