In early July, "Never say never" was released and received widespread praise, which achieved a high score of 7.6 in Douban. However, this movie is also highly controversial, people who like think it is second 'Dying to survive', while those who don't like it consider it a messy inspirational film. Below, I will share some of my perspectives into this highly controversial film through the film's creative techniques and plot.
First, let's talk about the advantages. Actually，the topic selection of the film is very good, and the unscrupulous media, online public opinion issues, and social wealth gap issues it raises are indeed of practical significance.
Furthermore, some cross editing and parallel montages in the movie can also express the thoughts and emotions of the social tragedy that the movie aims to express. Secondly, the acting skills of the actors are also very exploding. It can be said that no matter the leading role or supporting role, they all fit in with the character character, and they also fully portray the full characters and their emotions in some slow scenes.
At the same time, the shortcomings of this film are also very serious. Firstly, there are issues with the composition color of photography and the transition sound effect of editing. First of all, the shift in the cool and warm tones of the movie is not obvious, which can lead to certain aesthetic fatigue and deviation in environmental rendering. The single and deliberate gray tone in the final scene also fails to highlight the cruelty of combat. Secondly, the transitions in the editing are too rigid and lack a downplayed transition that can adjust the visual effect. The editing of sound effects is too rough, and efforts still need to be made in noise reduction and volume adjustment.
Furthermore, the narrative rhythm of the story is too exaggerated, and it would be better to eliminate some unnecessary interludes to increase the exploration of the theme of online public opinion.
Finally, the story lacks foreshadowing, and often the implementation of the story lacks motivation, making many shots slightly abrupt. A slight increase in the duration of the movie to supplement this point will make the narrative smoother. In addition, some fragmented scenes in the story are excellent in the second half, but slightly awkward in the first half.
The ending can only be said to be inexplicable, forcing a happy ending.
Overall, "Never say never has undoubtedly made significant progress as Wang Baoqiang's second film. The theme, deep reflection, and social satire are also outstanding. But there are still huge problems with both art photography and narrative techniques in the film, and the details also need to be polished. Many people believe that 'Never say never' is a masterpiece that is comparable to 'Medicine God', and I think it is still over praised. However, the emergence of 'Octagonal Cage' is undoubtedly a blessing for domestic realism themed films. Mr. Mo Yan once said, Literary works are never a tool for singing praises, but a weapon for exposing ugliness. I hope the country can change censorship system and allow more and more realistic film and television works to be seen on the big screen.
